Banana Chips

Noshing on banana chips is definitely a healthier choice than grabbing a bag of potato chips. However, enjoying this snack in small, occasional quantities is the smartest choice.

Hailing from the Philippines and Southeast Asia, banana chips are made from ripened green bananas, the fruit of the herbaceous plant. The bananas are dried, then fried to create a light, golden-yellow crunchy and sweet chip. Our banana chips are made using ripened bananas and fried with vegetable oil and turbinado sugar. Banana chips can also be seasoned for a zestier, saltier flavor.

These crispy snacks are a rich source of magnesium, manganese, and B6, plus they have a good amount of potassium and fiber. However, banana chips are also high in saturated fat. Simply adding banana chips to exisitng trail mixes (or while making your own), nut mixes, granola, oatmeal or cookies, is a great way to serve up the benefits, but limit the snacks high sugar and calories intake.

Banana chips are not to be confused with chifle, a form of dried bananas served in South America. Plantains are also often confused with bananas. Plantains are longer and have a thicker skin and are normally not eaten raw like their sister plant, due to their bitter taste. Plantains can be eaten dried as well.

Bananas, which are easily available year-round, produce more than 300 species all over the world. Interestingly, only 20 of those are grown for commercial use.
