Black Quinoa

Known as “Mother Grain” to the ancient Incans who grew it as a staple food, quinoa has found new life in modern cuisine thanks to its high levels of nutrition. Mount Hope bulk black quinoa has a nuttier texture and stronger flavor than its better known cousin, white quinoa. Like all types of quinoa, black quinoa (pronounced keen-whaa) is a seed, not a grain or cereal. It is high in protein and dietary fiber, making it perfect for vegans, vegetarians and anyone looking to reduce the number of animal products in their diet. Black quinoa is also a good source of vitamins B complex, vitamin E and vitamin C.

Our wholesale black quinoa is popular for making cold salads. Its stronger flavor makes a great base for fresh or steamed vegetables and can stand up to flavorful dressings. The crunchier texture adds interest to soups and stews. Add cooked quinoa just before serving to prevent it from overcooking. Use bulk black quinoa instead of rice in burritos and other Mexican favorites to reduce carbs and calories while adding flavor and nutrition. Sweetened with a touch of honey and coconut milk it makes a breakfast or pudding-like snack to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Quinoa is simple to prepare, however, overcooking this product is a common mistake. If overcooked, black quinoa can turn mushy and unappealing. Measure 1 cup quinoa to 2 cups water (always use a 1:2 ratio). Rinse measured quinoa in a fine sieve to remove excess starch. Place it in a medium saucepan with water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer on low until all the water is absorbed. Allow the cooked black quinoa to set off heat for at least 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork. Enjoy!
