Small Porcini Mushroom Pieces

Porcini mushrooms are a gourmet delicacy that can enhance the flavor of many kinds of dishes. Best known in Italian cuisine, the nutty, woodsy flavor of Mount Hope bulk dried porcini mushroom pieces are a pantry staple with many uses. Any dish that be good with mushrooms, will be even better with porcinis. Porcinis are best known for growing in Europe, but can be found in hardwood forests all around the world. They typically have a large cap, some up to 12 inches wide and a thick stem and can weigh more than two pounds. That’s a lot of mushroom! As stout as the porcini may be, it is also quite perishable. Their short shelf life is the reason why porcinis are best known in the U.S. as a dried product.

Porcini mushrooms have a higher protein content than most mushrooms, making them a smart option for vegan and vegetarian dishes. Their deep, meaty flavor is another reason for their popularity in meatless cuisine. However, the full umami flavors of porcini also means they pair well with hearty foods like beef, pork and heavy sauces. If you love the flavor of mushrooms, but aren’t crazy about the texture, use Mount Hope porcini mushroom powder to thicken and flavor soups and sauces or grind our bulk dried porcini to make your own “secret ingredient.”

Dried porcini mushroom pieces must be softened before using. Soak the needed amount in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes. After they are rehydrated, measure and treat the porcinis as you would any fresh mushroom. Don’t discard the soaking liquid, it is full of flavor. Use it as a cooking liquid for rice, risotto, gravy or stock. We also offer larger porcini pieces at a slightly higher cost.
