Great Northern Beans

Great Northern Beans, also called large white beans are one of the most popular beans. Great Northern Beans are considered a New World Bean, because historically they were grown in the Americas before Europeans arrived. This white, oval shaped mild tasting bean is similar to the cannellini bean, but smaller. Great Northerns can be used interchangeably in recipes that call for cannellini or navy beans.

Great Northern beans are so versatile and inexpensive they make a perfect ingredient in soups, rice, casseroles. stews, pasta, chili and dips. Great Northern beans pair well when combined with other beans like kidney beans and black beans to add protein, texture, and flavor to dishes. Great Northern Beans make delicious side dishes when dressing and sauces are added. When they are pureed, they can even be added to baked goods as a replacement for oil and fat to add to the recipe’s nutritional value.

Great Northern beans are full of protein, fiber and a good source of copper, folate, iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc. Beans are also filling and are a great food choice to maintain a healthy weight. Since they are so nutrient rich, they are known to help prevent heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity.
