Arrowroot Powder

Ground arrowroot is a gluten-free, grain-free, paleo-friendly product that contains no potato starch or other additives. It is made by extracting the starch from arrowroot plants which are a family of edible tubers originating in the Caribbean. Like cornstarch, arrowroot is most commonly used as a thickener for sauces, gravies and gels. It is also used in combination with other non-grain flours for gluten-free baking. Our arrowroot powder has a clean, neutral flavor that will not alter the final taste of your dish.

Many people prefer arrowroot to cornstarch because it is gluten-free, but that’s only one of the advantages arrowroot powder offers. In addition to thickening soups and savory sauces, arrowroot won’t break down when mixed with acidic ingredients. Use our bulk arrowroot to give fruit or vinegar sauces a reliably smooth texture. To substitute arrowroot for cornstarch in your favorite recipes, use two teaspoons arrowroot powder for one tablespoon of cornstarch. Use one teaspoon of arrowroot for every one tablespoon of a grain-based thickening agent.

For the best success, be careful not to overheat it. Add a slurry of arrowroot powder and tepid water to the liquid you wish to thicken. Heat until the mixture is thickened and remove from heat. Do not put the product directly into hot liquid. The starch will absorb too much liquid at once, resulting in clumps and uneven consistency. In baking, use our wholesale arrowroot powder instead of coconut or almond flour when you prefer a more neutral tasting flour. The texture of arrowroot helps lighten the density of some alternative flours, resulting in lighter, airier gluten-free baked goods.
