Herbs De Provence

.

Herbs de Provence is a fragrant, ancient mix of dried Provencal herbs, or summer herbs, that brings the fresh, earthy taste of South France into your restaurant or kitchen. It is popular in French and Mediterranean cuisine and hails from southeast France. This classic mix of thyme, rosemary, fennel, basil, tarragon, and marjoram creates a savory, woodsy flavor with floral hints and notes of pine. Herbs de Provence blend differs from our italian seasoning where oregano is the mainstay.

Home cooks and chefs in France are used to having an abundance of summer herbs for their dishes as they grow well in that region. However, the well-known mix of Herbs de Provence didn’t gain popularity until the 1960’s thanks to famed French chef Julia Child. She used this specific mix in a recipe from her legendary cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The recipe: Poulet Sauté aux Herbs de Provence, or fried chicken with Provence Herbs.

While fresh herbs are a preferred choice for chefs and home cooks, it isn’t easy to always find the exact ones you need, especially for Herbs de Provence, and especially if you aren’t cooking during peak growing seasons. The dried version is just as tasty. Chefs can keep bulk stores of this herb mix on hand and ready to go any time of year, unlike their fresh counterparts.

Herbs de Provence herb blend is a versatile addition to many dishes. It goes well with poultry, rabbit, and meat. Marinate or braise rabbit or chicken with the herb before cooking. Use it in a classic ratatouille, blended in oils alongside a charcuterie platter, and as the base of a vinaigrette for salads.
